Winter 2005-06

First snow of the season.
Picture perfect
Christmas morning.
Fog in December?
Out for a stroll.
A snowfall warning had just been issued and the first few flakes were falling.
By early afternoon a little snow was beginning to gather but roads were still clear.
Blowing snow at night.
There was enough snow throughout the night for the plow to be out in the morning but not as much as first predicted.
Snow on the bushes & on the hills.
February gets off to a stormy start!
First Major Storm of the Season, Wednesday, Feb 1/06

It started with a snowfall warning, forecasting amounts of between 35-45 cm, with NE
winds gusting up to 90km. When I looked out the window at 4-am everything was clear.
I woke again at 6-am and I could hear the snow hitting my window. I got up shortly
after that and checked the forecast - we were now under a BLIZZARD WARNING!
The temperature was -2 with a windchill of -12. Snow was piling up on one side of the
street while the other side was bare. The Town Work Foreman came along and said St.
Lawrence had clocked wind gusts of 94. As these first two photos (above right)
indicate, visibility was already reduced but this wasn't the height of the storm. Later
that morning, the birds were taking shelter in the lower bare branches of a Withy tree.
By 10:30 winds were E 86, gusting to 119. At times
visibility was practically zero. At one point in the day
winds were reported by the Weather Channel as being
NE 86 with gusts up to 124. These conditions lasted
all day though the wind had dropped to 76 by midnight.
Snowfall had taped off but drifting still created very
blustery conditions.
Feb 2nd (Above): I was surprised to see the school bus operating. As you can see, it was still pretty stormy at times.
These conditions were expected to continue through most of the day until the wind dropped late in the afternoon. The
snow is packed down tightly which reduces some of the drifting but makes for heavier shoveling.
Mar 9th: The forecast was calling for a trace amount of
snow overnight (on the 8th) for this area - nothing to be
concerned about. However, there was enough to bring
the snow plow out the following morning!
Mar 10th: An absolutely beautiful sunny winter day.
Mar 11th: Forecast wanted
snow overnight (10th), with
rain in the morning. Turned
out to be freezing rain;
pretty but slippery. By
noon it had melted again.
