Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto
Flatrock, Newfoundland
Flatrock, Newfoundland, is a very small community with a lot of history and heritage. This picturesque town, however, is the site of one of the most beautiful and inspiring man-made attractions in the province.
Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto is a monument to both the religious and community spirit of Flatrock. It was inspired by Father William Sullivan, the local parish priest, after he realized the similarity of the landscape to that of the famous grotto at Lourdes, France.

For four years (1954-1958) the dedicated people of Flatrock spent their spare time turning the priest's vision into reality. Words cannot describe the beauty, peace and serenity which fills the air there. From the moment you enter the gates, you know you are on sacred ground. But the emotions that overwhelm you, especially as you stand beside the life-size crucifix on top of the hill, must be experienced to be believed.
The photos on the next page are numbered in sequence, beginning as you enter the gate; up the steps on the left, across the top, and down on the right. Only one of the stone "tablets" is included but they line the pathway, depicting the various stations of the cross, etc.
