Flag Flag A Brief Introduction to
Newfoundland & Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador holds the distinction of being Britain's oldest colony and Canada's youngest province. (The newly formed Nunavut is a Territory.) It is a place of contrasts and great natural beauty; with snow-capped mountains; unpolluted rivers, lakes and ponds; sparkling waterfalls; lush green meadows and forests; golden sandy beaches; and rocky windswept coastlines. There is beauty in the changing seasons — the new growth of spring; summer's many colourful flowers; the orange, red and gold leaves of autumn; or winter's soft white snowdrifts and crystal ice.

The province's history is an old one. Among its first inhabitants were the Maritime Archaic Indians, Dorset Eskimos, Beothuck, Montaganis and Micmac. The Vikings came later — around the year 1000 AD. However, it was probably not until the 15th century that Europeans first arrived in force, drawn by the promise of lucrative fishing on the nearby Grand Banks. The Basques, Portuguese and others were coming to this area on a regular basis and probably established seasonal fishing stations here.

Apart from fishermen, history has recorded visits by famous explorers such as John Cabot (1497), Gaspar Corte Real (1500), Jacques Cartier (1534), Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1583), and John Guy (1610), plus many more. During those early years, pirates and privateers were also part of the picture, sometimes preying on merchant vessels and raiding coastal communities, but also to take shelter in the many coves and inlets along the shoreline. The most famous pirate to visit Newfoundland was Peter Easton.

All those events, plus many others, combine to give the province a rich, colourful history. Such happenings have helped shape the culture and heritage of a unique breed of people — Newfoundlanders and Labradorians! I will attempt to bring you a brief look at a very special place by introducing you to some or my favourite things as well as short forays into the past. Some of the content comes from researching other written records, some comes from personal knowledge and experience. I hope to present the province, and everything about it, in an interesting and informative way. I will strive for accuracy, but I am human, so do not hesitate to inform me of any errors. I welcome all comments and constructive feedback.
