Flag Flag The Pitcher Plant

The floral emblem of Newfoundland and Labrador is the Pitcher Plant, or Sarracenis Purpurea. Officially adopted in 1954, it was shown on the Newfoundland penny prior to Confederation with Canada.

Pennies

Found mostly in bogs and marshland, it has one large dark red bloom, with a red and gold center, rising on a long stem. It is a carnivorous plant, feeding off the insects which are trapped inside the hollow urn-shaped leaves at the base of its stem.

The eight known species of Sarracenia, most of which are found in the southeastern United States, are further divided into subspecies. Of the two subspecies of S. purpurea, our emblem is the S. Purpurea gibbosa and is found from New Jersey, all the way up to Labrador.
